Introduction: Low-temperature stress negatively impacts rice yield, posing a significant risk to food security. While previous studies have explored the physiological and linear gene expression alterations in rice under low-temperature conditions, the changes in competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) networks remain largely unexamined. Methods: We conducted RNA sequencing on two japonica rice varieties with differing cold-tolerance capabilities to establish ceRNA networks. This enabled us to investigate the transcriptional regulatory network and molecular mechanisms that rice employs in response to low-temperature stress. Results: We identified 364 differentially expressed circular RNAs (circRNAs), 224 differentially expressed microRNAs (miRNAs), and 12,183 differentially expressed messenger RNAs (mRNAs). WRKY family was the most prominent transcription factor family involved in cold tolerance. Based on the expression patterns and targeted relationships of these differentially expressed RNAs, we discerned five potential ceRNA networks related to low-temperature stress in rice: osa-miR166j-5p from the miR166 family was associated with cold tolerance; osa-miR528-3p and osa-miR156j-3p were linked to stress response; and osa-miR156j-3p was involved in the antioxidant system. In addition, Os03g0152000 in the antioxidant system, as well as Os12g0491800 and Os05g0381400, correlated with the corresponding stress response and circRNAs in the network. A gene sequence difference analysis and phenotypic validation of Os11g0685700 (OsWRKY61) within the WRKY family suggested its potential role in regulating cold tolerance in rice. Discussion and conclusion: We identified Os11g0685700 (OsWRKY61) as a promising candidate gene for enhancing cold tolerance in japonica rice. The candidate miRNAs, mRNAs, and circRNAs uncovered in this study are valuable targets for researchers and breeders. Our findings will facilitate the development of cold-tolerant rice varieties from multiple angles and provide critical directions for future research into the functions of cold-tolerance-related miRNAs, mRNAs, and circRNAs in rice.

We report a Ta2O5 photonic platform with a propagation loss of 0.49 dB/cm at 1550 nm, of 0.86 dB/cm at 780 nm, and of 3.76 dB/cm at 2000 nm. The thermal bistability measurement is conducted in the entire C-band for the first time to reveal the absorption loss of Ta2O5 waveguides, offering guidelines for further reduction of the waveguide loss. We also characterize the Ta2O5 waveguide temperature response, which shows favorable thermal stability. The fabrication process temperature is below 350°C, which is friendly to integration with active optoelectronic components.

To optimize the treatment plan for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and hyperuricemia, this narrative literature review summarizes the effect of antidiabetic drugs on serum uric acid (SUA) levels using data from observational studies, prospective clinical trials, post-hoc analyses and meta-analyses. SUA is an independent risk factor for T2DM, and evidence has shown that patients with both gout and T2DM exhibit a mutually interdependent effect on higher incidences. We find that insulin and dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitor (DPP-4i) except linagliptin could increase the SUA, and other drugs including metformin, thiazolidinediones (TZDs), glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs), linagliptin, sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) and α-glucosidase inhibitors have a reduction effect on SUA. We explain the mechanisms of different antidiabetic drugs above on SUA and analyze them compared with actual data. For sulfonylureas, meglitinides, and amylin analogs, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. We think the usage of linagliptin and SGLT2i is the most potentially effective treatment of patients with T2DM and hyperuricemia currently. Our review is a comprehensive summary of the effects of antidiabetic drugs on SUA, which includes actual data, the mechanisms of SUA regulation, and the usage rate of drugs.

RESUMO

Text content analysis for depression detection using machine learning techniques has become a prominent area of research. However, previous studies focused mainly on analyzing the textual content, neglecting the fundamental factors driving text generation. Consequently, existing models face the challenge of poor generalization to out-of-domain data as they struggle to capture the crucial features of depression. To address this, we propose a novel computational perspective of "stimulus-response patterns" that brings us closer to the essence of clinical diagnosis of depression. Adopting this computational perspective allows us to conceptually unify diverse datasets and generalize this perspective to common datasets in the field. We introduce the Stimulus-Response Patterns-aware Network (SRP-Net) as an exemplary approach within this computational perspective. To assess the performance of the SRP-Net, we constructed a multi-stimulus dataset and conducted experimental evaluations, demonstrating its exceptional cross-stimulus generalizability. Furthermore, we demonstrated the promising performance of SPR-Net in real medical scenarios and conducted an interpretability analysis of the stimulus-response patterns. Our research investigates the critical role of stimulus-response patterns in enhancing the generalizability of text-based depression detection models, which can potentially facilitate data-driven depression detection to approach the diagnostic accuracy of psychiatrists.

As a wide-bandgap rare-earth oxide, Eu2O3 was often utilized as an auxiliary material of other photocatalysts because its photocatalytic performance was limited by the luminescence characteristics of Eu3+ and low light utilization. In this study, we improved the photocatalytic degradation performance of the Eu2O3 nanoparticles by doping with Fe cations. The Eu2O3 nanoparticles with different Fe-doping concentrations (1, 3, and 5%, noted as EF1.0, EF3.0, and EF5.0, respectively) were synthesized via chemical precipitation and calcination methods. It was found that doping could reduce Eu2O3's bandgap, which probably originated from the introduction of oxygen vacancies with lower energy levels than the conduction band of Eu2O3. Compared with the undoped Eu2O3 nanoparticles with a removal efficiency of 22% for degrading rhodamine B dye within 60 min, the photocatalytic degradation efficiencies of EF1.0, EF3.0, and EF5.0 were demonstrated to be improved to 42, 48, and 33%, respectively, and EF3.0's performance was the best. The enhanced photocatalytic performance of the doped samples was related to the oxygen vacancies acting as capture centers for electrons, such that the photogenerated electron-hole pairs were efficiently separated and the redox reactions on the surface of the nanoparticles were enhanced accordingly. Additionally, the enhanced light absorption and broadened spectral band further improved EF3.0's degradation efficiency.

Depressive disorders have a significant impact on public health, and depression have an unsatisfactory recurrence rate and are challenging to treat. Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) are RNAs that do not code protein, which have been shown to be crucial for transcriptional regulation. NcRNAs are important to the onset, progress and treatment of depression because they regulate various physiological functions. This makes them distinctively useful as biomarkers for diagnosing and tracking responses to therapy among individuals with depression. It is important to seek out and summarize the research findings on the impact of ncRNAs on depression since significant advancements have been made in this area recently. Hence, we methodically outlined the findings of published researches on ncRNAs and depression, focusing on microRNAs. Above all, this review aims to improve our understanding of ncRNAs and provide new insights of the diagnosis and treatment of depression.

A carbon nanotube (CNT) may facilitate near-frictionless water transport within it. In this work, we elucidate the slip flow characteristics for a CNT embedded in a silicon nitride matrix using the molecular dynamics (MD) method. We reveal that the wetting transparency of a CNT, the transmission of the membrane matrix wetting property over a CNT, cannot be ignored. Due to the effect of CNT wetting transparency, the orientation flip behavior of water molecules should be the primary cause of the entrance and exit losses, which is a dominant factor influencing the interfacial friction coefficient for the thin CNT membrane. The relationship between the friction coefficient and pore size follows a logarithmic function, which agrees well with the reported experimental data. Our findings bridge the gap between the MD prediction and experimental observation for water transport in a CNT membrane and provide a clear understanding of the mechanism behind its ultrafast flow performance.

Aims: To investigate the characteristics and diagnostic performance of quantitative computed tomography (QCT) parameters in eosinophilic chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. Methods: High-resolution CT scans of COPD patients were retrospectively analyzed, and various emphysematous parenchyma measurements, including lung volume (LC), lung mean density (LMD), lung standard deviation (LSD), full-width half maximum (FWHM), and lung relative voxel number (LRVN) were performed. The QCT parameters were compared between eosinophilic and noneosinophilic COPD patients, using a definition of eosinophilic COPD as blood eosinophil values ≥ 300 cells·µL-1 on at least three times. Receiver operating characteristic curves and area under the curve (ROC-AUC) and python were used to evaluate discriminative efficacy of QCT. Results: Noneosinophilic COPD patients had a significantly lower TLMD (-846.3 ± 47.9 Hounsfield Unit [HU]) and TFWHM(162.5 ± 30.6 HU) compared to eosinophilic COPD patients (-817.8 ± 54.4, 177.3 ± 33.1 HU, respectively) (p = 0.018, 0.03, respectively). Moreover, the total LC (TLC) and TLSD were significantly lower in eosinophilic COPD group (3234.4 ± 1145.8, 183.8 ± 33.9 HU, respectively) than the noneosinophilic COPD group (5600.2 ± 1248.4, 203.5 ± 20.4 HU, respectively) (p = 0.009, 0.002, respectively). The ROC-AUC values for TLC, TLMD, TLSD, and TFWHM were 0.91 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.828-0.936), 0.66 (95% CI, 0.546-0.761), 0.64 (95% CI, 0.524-0.742), and 0.63 (95% CI, 0.511-0.731), respectively. When the TLC value was 4110 mL, the sensitivity was 90.7% (95% CI, 79.7-96.9), specificity was 77.8% (95% CI, 57.7-91.4) and accuracy was 86.4%. Notably, TLC demonstrated the highest discriminative efficiency with an F1 Score of 0.79, diagnostic Odds Ratio of 34.3 and Matthews Correlation Coefficient of 0.69, surpassing TLMD (0.55, 3.66, 0.25), TLSD (0.56, 3.95, 0.26), and TFWHM (0.56, 4.16, 0.33). Conclusion: Eosinophilic COPD patients exhibit lower levels of emphysema and a more uniform density distribution throughout the lungs compared to noneosinophilic COPD patients. Furthermore, TLC demonstrated the highest diagnostic efficiency and may serve as a valuable diagnostic marker for distinguishing between the two groups.

Cardiac fibrosis is a major public health problem worldwide, with high morbidity and mortality, affecting almost all patients with heart disease worldwide. It is characterized by fibroblast activation, abnormal proliferation, excessive deposition, and abnormal distribution of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins. The maladaptive process of cardiac fibrosis is complex and often involves multiple mechanisms. With the increasing research on cardiac fibrosis, redox has been recognized as an important part of cardiac remodeling, and an imbalance in redox homeostasis can adversely affect the function and structure of the heart. The metabolism of metal ions is essential for life, and abnormal metabolism of metal ions in cells can impair a variety of biochemical processes, especially redox. However, current research on metal ion metabolism is still very limited. This review comprehensively examines the effects of metal ion (iron, copper, calcium, and zinc) metabolism-mediated redox homeostasis on cardiac fibrosis, outlines possible therapeutic interventions, and addresses ongoing challenges in this rapidly evolving field.

This study aimed to develop nomograms to accurately predict the overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) of non-metastatic bladder cancer (BC) patients. Clinicopathological information of 260,412 non-metastatic BC patients was downloaded from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database from 2000 to 2020. LASSO method and Cox proportional hazard regression analysis were utilized to discover the independent risk factors, which were used to develop nomograms. The accuracy and discrimination of models were tested by the consistency index (C-index), the area under the subject operating characteristic curve (AUC) and the calibration curve. Decision curve analysis (DCA) was used to test the clinical value of nomograms compared with the TNM staging system. Nomograms predicting OS and CSS were constructed after identifying independent prognostic factors. The C-index of the training, internal validation and external validation cohort for OS was 0.722 (95%CI: 0.720-0.724), 0.723 (95%CI: 0.721-0.725) and 0.744 (95%CI: 0.677-0.811). The C-index of the training, internal validation and external validation cohort for CSS was 0.794 (95%CI: 0.792-0.796), 0.793 (95%CI: 0.789-0.797) and 0.879 (95%CI: 0.814-0.944). The AUC and the calibration curves showed good accuracy and discriminability. The DCA showed favorable clinical potential value of nomograms. Kaplan-Meier curve and log-rank test uncovered statistically significance survival difference between high- and low-risk groups. We developed nomograms to predict OS and CSS for non-metastatic BC patients. The models have been internally and externally validated with accuracy and discrimination and can assist clinicians to make better clinical decisions.

Central nervous system lymphoma (CNSL) is a type of hematological tumor. Treatment of CNSL is difficult due to the existence of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Here, we used exosomes (Exos), a type of extracellular vesicle, and iRGD to construct a new drug carrier system and use it to load doxorubicin (DOX). The results of in vitro and in vivo experiments showed that the iRGD-Exo-DOX system can efficiently and securely transport DOX through the BBB and target tumor cells. The results suggest that iRGD-Exo-DOX may cross the BBB through brain microvascular endothelial cell-mediated endocytosis. Together, our study indicates an impactful treatment of central nervous system tumors.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a highly heterogeneous disease, with well-characterized subtypes based on genome, DNA methylome, and transcriptome signatures. To chart the epigenetic landscape of CRCs, we generated a high-quality single-cell chromatin accessibility atlas of epithelial cells for 29 patients. Abnormal chromatin states acquired in adenomas were largely retained in CRCs, which were tightly accompanied by opposite changes of DNA methylation. Unsupervised analysis on malignant cells revealed two epigenetic subtypes, exactly matching iCMS classification, and key iCMS-specific transcription factors were identified, including HNF4A, PPARA for iCMS2 tumors, and FOXA3, MAFK for iCMS3 tumors. Notably, subtype-specific TFs bind to distinct target gene sets and contribute to both inter-patient similarities and diversities for both chromatin accessibilities and RNA expressions. Moreover, we identified CpG-island methylator phenotypes and pinpointed chromatin state signatures and TF regulators for CIMP-High subtype. Our work systematically revealed the epigenetic basis of the well-known iCMS and CIMP classifications of CRCs.

As an essential auxiliary tool for acoustic emission (AE) detection, waveguide rods are widely used in testing situations where sensors cannot contact the specimens directly, such as high temperature, cryogenic, corrosion, radiation, etc. However, the AE signal attenuation in waveguide rod makes the risk of missing weak acoustic emission events in damage detection, which limits the application of waveguide rods. Therefore, in this work, a novel waveguide rod was presented based on acoustic black hole (ABH) theory to enhance the AE signal before reaching the sensor through the energy convergence effect of the ABH. Firstly, the geometric configuration of the waveguide rod with ABH was designed. The AE signal enhancement effect of the ABH waveguide rod was verified by comparing the amplitude of the AE signal for the traditional waveguide rod and the ABH waveguide rod by the finite element method. Secondly, the influence on the geometric parameters of the ABH waveguide rod for the AE signal enhancement effect was analyzed. The selection method of geometric parameters and the enhancement method of the AE signal with specific frequency bands were proposed to obtain expected AE signal enhancement results. Finally, the pencil-lead breaking experiments were implemented to verify the effectiveness of finite element method and the AE signal enhancement effect of ABH waveguide rod. The results show that the waveguide rod with ABH given in this paper has a significant AE signal enhancement effect and a good application prospect in structural acoustic emission health monitoring.

Cardiac fibrosis, a crucial pathological characteristic of various cardiac diseases, presents a significant treatment challenge. It involves the deposition of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and is influenced by genetic and epigenetic factors. Prior investigations have predominantly centered on delineating the substantial influence of epigenetic and epitranscriptomic mechanisms in driving the progression of fibrosis. Recent studies have illuminated additional avenues for modulating the progression of fibrosis, offering potential solutions to the challenging issues surrounding fibrosis treatment. In the context of cardiac fibrosis, an intricate interplay exists between m6A epitranscriptomic and epigenetics. This interplay governs various pathophysiological processes: mitochondrial dysfunction, mitochondrial fission, oxidative stress, autophagy, apoptosis, pyroptosis, ferroptosis, cell fate switching, and cell differentiation, all of which affect the advancement of cardiac fibrosis. In this comprehensive review, we meticulously analyze pertinent studies, emphasizing the interplay between m6A epitranscriptomics and partial epigenetics (including histone modifications and noncoding RNA), aiming to provide novel insights for cardiac fibrosis treatment.

Sensors were of paramount importance in the context of poultry and livestock farming, serving as essential tools for monitoring a variety of production management parameters. The effective surveillance and optimal control of the swine facility environment critically depend on the implementation of a robust strategy for situating the optimal number of sensors in precisely the right locations. This study presents a dynamic sensor placement approach for pigsties using the three-way k-means algorithm. The method involves determining candidate sensor combinations through the application of the k-means algorithm and a re-clustering strategy. The optimal sensor locations were then identified using the Joint Entropy-Based Method (JEBM). This approach adjusts sensor positions based on different seasons (summer and winter) to effectively monitor the overall environment of the pigsty. We employ two clustering models, one based on particle swarm optimization and the other on genetic algorithms, along with a re-clustering strategy to identify candidate sensor combinations. The joint entropy-based method (JEBM) helps select the optimal sensor placement. Fused data from the optimal sensor layout undergo a fuzzy fusion process, reducing errors compared to direct averaging. The results show varying sensor needs across seasons, and dynamic placement enhances pigsty environment monitoring. Our approach reduced the number of sensors from 30 to 5 (in summer) and 6 (in winter). The optimal sensor positions for both seasons were integrated. Comparing the selected sensor layout to the average of all sensor readings representing the overall pigsty environment, the RMSE were 0.227-0.294 and the MAPE were 0.172-0.228, respectively, demonstrating the effectiveness of the sensor layout.

The heavy fermion physics is dictated by subtle competing exchange interactions, posing a challenge to their understanding. One-dimensional (1D) Kondo lattice model has attracted special attention in theory, because of its exact solvability and expected unusual quantum criticality. However, such experimental material systems are extremely rare. Here, we demonstrate the realization of quasi-1D Kondo lattice behavior in a monolayer van der Waals crystal NbSe2, that is driven into a stripe phase via Se-deficient line defects. Spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy measurements and first-principles calculations indicate that the stripe-phase NbSe2 undergoes a novel charge-density wave transition, creating a matrix of local magnetic moments. The Kondo lattice behavior is manifested as a Fano resonance at the Fermi energy that prevails the entire film with a high Kondo temperature. Importantly, coherent Kondo screening occurs only in the direction of the stripes. Upon approaching defects, the Fano resonance exhibits prominent spatial 1D oscillations along the stripe direction, reminiscent of Kondo holes in a quasi-1D Kondo lattice. Our findings provide a platform for exploring anisotropic Kondo lattice behavior in the monolayer limit.

Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is a specific subtype of acute myeloid leukemia that is distinguished by the chromosomal translocation t(15;17)(q24;q21), which leads to the fusion of the promyelocytic leukemia (PML) gene with the retinoic acid receptor alpha (RARA). Recently, we identified a novel fusion gene in APL, RARA::ankyrin repeat domain 34C (ANKRD34C), identified its functions by morphological, cytogenetic, molecular biological and multiplex fluorescence in situ hybridization analyses, and demonstrated the potential therapeutic effect clinically and experimentally of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA); the findings have important implications for the diagnosis and treatment of atypical APL.
